Wine Tasting to Benefit the Richmond District Libraries Campaign

When: Sunday, February 8, 2009 from 2 pm to 5 pm

Where: Presidio Golf Club, 300 Finley Road at Arguello Gate (take a right through the gate and a left into parking lot)

Details: Enjoy a fabulous afternoon of tastings from 20 different wineries and delicious appetizers. All proceeds benefit the Richmond District Libraries Campaign to raise money for furniture, fixtures, and equipment to complete the renovations for the Richmond/Senator Milton Marks and Anza branch libraries. Chinese New Year Concert and Celebration

Richmond District Advisory Council (DAC) Meeting

Featured Film: Citizen McCaw (2008) – The film chronicles events since July 2006, when editor Jerry Roberts and five of his colleagues quit the Santa Barbara News-Press, citing owner and co-publisher Wendy McCaw’s abandonment of journalistic ethics, which McCaw denied. Since then, McCaw and dozens of her former staffers have been engaged in a fierce clash of wills that raises important national questions of journalistic ethics and media ownership. Harvest Food Pantry

Where: St. John’s Presbyterian Church, @ Arguello & Lake
Details: Networking with the San Francisco Food Bank, we distribute supplemental groceries to 150 needy families & individuals at the church. Since Oct. 2000, we’ve distributed over 250,000 pounds of food. Would you like to volunteer? We are always seeking help from willing individuals including children, seniors and students. Multi Cultural Children’s Art Workshops MCAP (Multi Cultural Children’s Arts Program)

October 1 Community Meeting in Response to Murdered Bicyclist in Richmond District

In response to the tragic murder of Jordan McKay on September 17, 2008 at Cabrillo Street and 15th Avenue in our Richmond District, the Central Richmond District Safety Committee (CRDSC) is holding a community meeting. The goals of the meeting are:

- Provide whatever details are available about this particular incident
- Understand crime trends in our neighborhood — is crime getting better or worse, and why?
- Know what steps we can take to reduce crime and make our neighborhood safer

San Francisco Surfers Targeted by Car Thieves

So this just in from the Police Captain at Richmond District Police Station. SF Surfers – you gotta keep your eye out for car thieves because they’ve got their eye on you.

From Richmond Station Newsletter:

As some of you may remember, last year at about this time, we had numerous reports of cars being stolen from the area of the Great Highway. Many of the victims were surfers who hide their car keys somewhere on the outside of their cars while they are in the water. The vehicles were usually found the same day parked nearby and personal property had been taken from the cars. We have had an increase of this crime within the last month and

want you to be aware of this. Surfers are again being targeted as the suspect watches were they hide their keys. An investigation is on going and plainclothes officers from both the Richmond and Taraval districts are working on identifying the suspect.

It seems that The Avenues Blog has come to the attention of all kinds of local politicians running for office. Since The Avenues Blog likes all the attention it can get, I’ll be kind enough to go ahead and post the latest updates from the local candidates.

Sue Lee is running for Richmond Supervisor and we are having our campaign kick off rally this Saturday July 26th at 1pm at the Richmond District Neighborhood Center on 30th Ave and Balboa. I would love if you could post this information for your readers in the Richmond.

Legion of Honor’s Cinema Supper Club Set to Kick Off!

CINEMA SUPPER CLUB OPENS WITH SPECIAL SCREENING OF

HITCHCOCK’S VERTIGO

AT THE LEGION OF HONOR ON JULY 10

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Cinema Supper Club kicks off its summer series, “From the Golden Gate to the Silver Screen,” on Thursday, July 10, with a special 50th anniversary screening of Hitchcock’s masterpiece, Vertigo, at the Legion of Honor, one of the key locations in the film. The screening will be preceded by a talk by the authors of Footsteps in the Fog: Alfred Hitchcock’s San Francisco and other Vertigo-themed activities.

The festivities begin at 6 pm at the Legion when visitors will notice a classic Jaguar similar to Madeline’s parked in front of the entry. Inside, an artist will paint the infamous “Carlotta” portrait that hung in the galleries overhead. A series of “then and now” photos reveal what happened to key locations around San Francisco that were used in the film. The Legion Café will present a menu of mid-century modern classics and the “Carlotta-tini” cocktail. Period dress is encouraged.

From 6:45 – 7:15 pm, authors Aaron Leventhal and Jeff Kraft will conduct a signing of their book, Footsteps in the Fog: Alfred Hitchcock’s San Francisco in the Museum Store. At 7:30, they will present an illustrated talk on San Francisco’s importance as a “character” in Vertigo. Our 50th anniversary screening of Vertigo begins at 8 pm in the Florence Gould Theater.

About Cinema Supper Club

Cinema Supper Club is a quarterly movie series put on by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco at the Legion of Honor on Thursday evenings. These evenings offer visitors a unique opportunity to view the special exhibitions at the Legion during uncrowded, evening hours, see a themed, classic film and have a drink or a relaxed dinner at the museum Café. The summer series, “From the Golden Gate to the Silver Screen,” features movies filmed in San Francisco. This summer’s series presents:

For many decades, the four artists celebrated in Women Impressionists: Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Eva Gonzales, Marie Bracquemond were treated with critical ambivalence and lacked major public exhibitions. It is only now that their innovative styles and contributions to Impressionism are showcased in a groundbreaking exhibition this summer at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, the exclusive U.S. venue. Women Impressionists is on view from June 21 to September 21, 2008. The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to directly compare the work of these women artists by bringing 140 pieces together for the first time.
